GM: Habitat/Society: The slow metabolism of the zaratani assure them incredibly long (if uneventful) lives, measured in millennia. The zaratani are said to have been floating in the sea long before the genies first visited the Land of Fate. At any given time, a zaratan is 99% likely to be sleeping. As it slumbers, it keeps its mouth wide open. Any small to man-sized creatures stupid enough to swim inside (large fish mostly) are reflexively swallowed. The zaratan spends the rest of its time either mating or conversing with others of its own kind. Every few centuries, by sheer coincidence, a pair of zaratani will drift into each other. Should they awake (and be of the opposite sex), they will mate. The courtship ritual may take decades, and the mating itself lasts as long as a year.

GM: The older a zaratan gets, the longer it sleeps. As a result, many actually become indistinguishable from a floating island or reef, supporting their own mini-ecosystems on their broad, rocky carapaces and underbellies. Many sport stunted palm trees and vegetation on their shells. The older and wiser zaratani are perfectly content to be attended by lesser symbiotic beings, provided the symbiotes are not too bothersome and don't interfere with a zaratan's sleep. A few are known to support small, uncivilized villages, while others have even been used as a mobile base for pirates and corsairs!

MeLange: If I'm not mistaken I do believe that's a Zaratani

seyfert (Vee Barlett): and if not, just sleep it off and wait until you wake again

MeLange: I think it's ok yall

MeLange: Zaratani just sleep a lot, most of the time, and if not then they're talking or boning

Rothuss Carder: Where do you learn about these things?

MeLange: and if it's not talking or boning, then it's sleeping

MeLange: Library duh

Glimber Silvernose: Huh

Temperance: Well... glad to know it lies asleep.

MeLange: plus, them trees and birds and such, makes me think it's an older one

Temperance: No wonder it grows vegetation on its shell.

MeLange: like we said, just stay away from it's mouth, unless you want a very different type of adventure

MeLange: and you know, if we get up there, be nice and polite

MeLange: don't make a rucous

Rothuss Carder: Well dang. Sounds like others have been there before.

MeLange: otherwise it's fine, not really sure what we'd get out of it, but it sounds like a lot of fun

Temperance: It really does sound a lot like an island.

MeLange: But if it does start waking up for any reason, we should probably get off the shell if you know what I mean

MeLange: like a floating moving living island

Glimber Silvernose: Turtle Island!

MeLange: Turtle power!

Temperance: scribbles down notes for reference.

Glimber Silvernose: Yes!

GM: Tryign to think of anything else that Mel can give you guys

GM: No clue

Rothuss Carder: plops down cross-legged in the sand and puts his chin in his hands and just observes the Zaratan for a while then, trying to commit it to memory.

GM: BUT I have to leave for work in just about 8 hours so I need to get to sleep soon
